A while back, I was working on a retrofit project and came across a system that had been installed five years earlier. The Group Addresses were named at random – things like “1/2/3” – with no documentation to speak of. When the client asked to add a new sensor, the technical team burned two days just trying to figure out which address belonged to which device.
Those two days cost more than doing the documentation properly would have on day one. Documentation isn’t paperwork for its own sake. It’s an investment, and you feel the return the moment your first change request comes in.
