In this article, we&#8217;ll walk through the four KNX <strong>media<\/strong> (the physical ways KNX data travels), where each one is best applied, the two <strong>configuration modes<\/strong> available on KNX devices, and finally the concept of <strong>interworking<\/strong> that makes multi-vendor KNX installations possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the technical foundation you&#8217;ll need before diving into topology, telegrams, and device-level details in later chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1 KNX Media: How KNX Data Travels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As explained in the previous article on <a href=\"\/posts\/knx-vs-conventional-installation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KNX vs conventional installation<\/a>, the exchange of KNX data between devices is <strong>typically done via a separate control cable<\/strong>. But that&#8217;s not the only option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KNX data can also be transmitted through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Twisted Pair (TP)<\/strong> \u2014 via a separate control cable (the most common medium)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Powerline (PL)<\/strong> \u2014 via the existing 230 V cable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Radio Frequency (RF)<\/strong> \u2014 wirelessly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IP<\/strong> \u2014 via Ethernet or WiFi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond these four, KNX telegrams can also be transmitted over <strong>other media<\/strong> \u2014 such as optical fibre \u2014 through appropriate <strong>gateways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When connecting different media together, suitable <strong>media couplers<\/strong> must be used. For example, products with the <strong>LTE label<\/strong> (Logical Tag Extended) are normally configured via LTE mechanisms \u2014 however, all of them include a defined <strong>S-Mode interface<\/strong>, which allows linking them with S-Mode-compliant devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This flexibility is one of the reasons KNX can serve such a wide range of projects, from small retrofits to large commercial buildings. The ETS software itself is covered in more depth in later chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.4 KNX Interworking: Why Multi-Vendor Systems Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Interworking<\/strong> is the concept that makes KNX truly manufacturer-independent. Devices from <strong>different manufacturers<\/strong> and <strong>different functional areas<\/strong> \u2014 as long as they carry the <strong>KNX trademark<\/strong> and use the <strong>same configuration mechanism<\/strong> \u2014 can be linked together to form a functioning installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is possible thanks to KNX standardization in two key areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Telegrams<\/strong> \u2014 Devices usually use <strong>standard telegrams<\/strong> for transmission.
